Classroom Management
The first week of school, we will work on establishing a collaborative classroom. I feel it is important to create an atmosphere of safety, trust, and respect. We will work hard to build a sense of community and emphasize the idea of teamwork. I am a firm believer that the best learning takes place in this type of environment. I look forward to working together in order to make this a very successful school year for your child (academically, socially, and emotionally).
Every week there will be a new TEAM CAPTAIN for each pod of desks. They will be responsible for specific jobs such as collecting papers, passing out team materials, and making sure the team is working together to keep their area clean and organized.
A new Teacher's Helper is chosen everyday. The teacher's helper takes the lunch count to the cafeteria, carries recess equipment out, and helps Ms. Wade with other tasks during the day.
All students are responsible for helping to keep our classroom running smoothly so we can have the best possible learning environment for all students!
Lunch (11:45-12:15) and Snack (9:05)
Please put money for lunch in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and my name.
Snack will be in the morning. Please provide a healthy snack for your child each day that they can open independently.
Birthdays
As noted in the school handbook, birthday treats are to be passed out during lunch time. Please do not send birthday invitations for your child to pass out. This helps to avoid hurt feelings among classmates.
B.E.E. (Bring Everything Everyday) Binder
Take Home Folder
Along with the agenda, your child will have an orange Take Home Folder that will come home and needs to be brought back to school everyday. Important notes, lunch money, papers done in class, and forms not sent in the Thursday Folders will be sent home in the orange folder. Homework will be sent in the folder and will need to be completed and returned in folder the next day. The hands located on the folder’s pockets indicate if the paperwork is to be filled out and brought “RIGHT Back to School” or if it needs to be “LEFT at Home.”
Agenda
The agenda is a great communication tool. Your child will write weekly spelling words and a daily homework in the agenda. I may also write notes to you and you may communicate small notes to me as well. It is important to read and sign the agenda daily. Please do not send transportation changes in the agenda.
Colorful Classmate of the Week
Each child in our class is special in many ways and we want to learn more! After reading the book, The Crayon Box That Talked by Shane DeRolf, we discuss how every child is unique and it takes each of us to make the class complete (just like the crayon box in the story)! The students create a new crayon with a name that describes them (Ex. Bright Barbara).
Each student will have the opportunity to be "Colorful Classmate of the Week." Your child will create a poster all about him/her self to share with the class. The poster will be displayed on a bulletin board titled, "___________ colors our class because..." More information will be sent home on your child's special week.
Homework
Homework will be sent home Monday-Thursday. After your child completes the day’s homework, sign the agenda to verify that the homework was completed. Return all homework the next day (except for special projects).
A homework checklist is filled out everyday as homework is turned in. Homework completion counts for 10% of the final grade.
Remember that homework is primarily given to practice skills and instill responsibility in your 3rd grader. Please use discretion while working on the homework with your child. I want your child to be challenged but at the same time feel successful. Have your child work at his/her own ability.
Absences
If your child is absent due to a sickness, please send a note when he/she returns in order for the absence to be excused. Make-up work for the day(s) missed will be sent home. It is to your child's benefit to make-up missed work.
